Obesity: Causes and Treatment

Obesity is defined as a condition in which the percentage of body fat is greater than 22% for males and 35% for females. It is of utmost importance to resolve this condition as obesity is associated with a wide range of increased health risks. For example, obesity increases the risk of cardiovascular disease more than seven times and is also a known risk factor for diabetes, cancer and arthritis. The primary factors that promote the development of obesity are a diet high in carbohydrates and/or calories combined with a sedentary lifestyle. Other contributing factors may include insulin resistance, impaired liver metabolism, nutritional deficiency, hypothyroidism, food allergies, candidiasis, parasitic infection, low serotonin levels and psychological factors.
