According to the American Cancer Society, smoking is responsible for nearly one in five deaths overall and almost a third of all cancer deaths. Extensive research has linked smoking to 12 types of cancer ranging from adult acute leukemia to bladder cancer. The most recent addition to the list is colorectal cancer. As if this wasn't sufficient, smoking is a major cause of heart disease and associated with many other health problems, including emphysema, stroke, and even the common cold. As many smokers can tell you, smoking makes breathing during exercise a whole lot harder and thus can make activity less enticing. It appears to compromise memory, too.
